SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY THROUGH SMALL GRANTS

2008 marks Decatur’s 8th Annual BBQ, Blues & Bluegrass Festival (BBBFest), a signature event that directly benefits the Decatur community. For the second year, the BBQ, Blues & Bluegrass Festival Small Grant Program will disburse 40% of the net proceeds from the event to worthy causes in Decatur. Organizations and individuals are invited to apply for funds to support projects that will directly and measurably benefit the City of Decatur community. The BBBFest Grant Committee will award grants in amounts ranging from $500 to $5,000.

Founded by the Decatur Preservation Alliance in 2000, the Festival initially generated funds needed to preserve the Old Decatur Depot on Howard Street. Once that goal was accomplished, festival proceeds were directed toward other community needs, through the auspices of presenting organizations. In 2006, the event generated a net profit of nearly $36,000, divided equally among the three presenting organizations: the Community Center of South Decatur (“the Solarium”), the Decatur Recreation Department (on behalf of the Decatur Youth Fund), and the Oakhurst Neighborhood Association.

The same three organizations are presenting the 2008 festival. Each will receive 20% of the net profit, and the remaining 40% will be turned over to the BBBFest Grant Committee, a panel of seven Decatur residents appointed by the chairperson of the BBBFest Event Committee.
